Nearly every family in Uganda is affected by poverty, HIV/AIDS, abduction, and brutal war. These horrors rage indiscriminately, and the innocence of childhood is not spared. The children of Uganda have been witnesses to much trauma that children should not experience. And yet, so many continue to nurse a deep desire to excel and to serve their country. L.E.A.D Uganda, an educational leadership initiative, seeks out these potentially forgotten children and offers them education, security and more importantly, hope to become the next leaders of the country they love. Meet Katongole. As a teenager, he worked in a quarry breaking stones into pebbles for 1500 shillings (73¢) a day. He could not afford to go to school full-time but his innate abilities and resilience have rewarded him with a full scholarship to pharmacy school. Ronald, a past child soldier, lost him father and right arm to rebel fighters. Without drive and assistance, he would not been able to work, but now his dream of being a lawyer is a reality. This book documents the touching stories of the young and talented future of Uganda.
