For several decades, the Baltimore Orioles were the class and envy of major league baseball. Over an 18-year period from 1966 through 1983, the Orioles played in six World Series, winning three of them. They had the highest winning percentage of any team in baseball for 30 years. Most of their stars were home-grown products, players signed and reared in the Orioles organization. They were proud to play for Baltimore and to be part of the vaunted "Oriole Way." About the Author:

As a youngster in the 1950s, author Louis Berney attended as many Orioles games as possible at old Memorial Stadium. He could recite every pertinent Orioles statistic through his college years. But he didn't start writing about the team until the Orioles moved to Camden Yards in 1992. He had just returned to Baltimore after a career as a journalist that had taken him to locales ranging from Montgomery, Alabama, to Eastern Europe. During that career he had written about travel and international affairs, food and film, state government and retirement savings plans. Through the years, though, he remained devoted to the Orioles and was able to attend every World Series in the team's history. Since returning to Baltimore in the early 1990s, Berney has been covering the Orioles for Outside Pitch and Baseball Weekly. And he's still waiting for them-and counting on them-to return to their days of glory.
