Reviews

PreS-Gr 2-Based on an episode in the animated TV series, this story unfolds at a pace similar to an action-based television cartoon, and the dialogue reads like a script. While playing with a train, Justin and his small pal Squidgy take an imaginary trip. The two scoot across the floor, chugging along in a steam engine. At a station in Canada, they meet their friend Olive, who runs the maple-syrup stop, and Justin and Squidgy take the syrup and Olive to the Flapjack Falls Pancake Festival. Along the way, a tree blocks the tracks, but a friendly beaver and moose use their talents to clear the way. Readers learn about the mechanics of steam engines when the train runs out of coal and wood from the cut tree becomes a substitute fuel. James's colorful cartoon illustrations support the text and vary in size. Those looking for didactic stories will find the plot offers teachable moments on cooperation and transportation, but it is strictly an additional purchase.-Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron, OHα(c) Copyright 2011.
