Gr. 3-5. This title in the Upsets & Comebacks series describes an event most young sports fans will easily recall: the Boston Red Sox's historic 2004 season, marked by their playoffs win against longtime rival, the New York Yankees, followed by their World Series triumph against the St. Louis Cardinals. Numerous large, clear photographs, both contemporary and archival, help tell the tale, which is narrated here in brief, topical spreads punctuated by bright-red fact boxes and headline banners. The text overuses exclamation points, but it delivers the exciting story cleanly, starting with the very first World Series (which Boston won in 1903), then documenting the team's long slump. Appended material includes trivia, a time line, a short bibliography, two Web sites, and a glossary, which features baseball terminology as well as potentially challenging words such as defeated and elimination. Grade 3-5–In each book, Sandler dramatically sets the stage by delineating why the outcome of the particular game or match was noteworthy. In the case of the Boston Red Sox and Venus Williams, many sports enthusiasts thought that their prime time had come and gone. In Hockey and Soccer, readers are informed that the young U.S. teams were not expected to do well in the tournaments. Yet in each instance, players exhibited the stamina that led to a successful outcome. The author clearly describes each sport and provides enough history for the uninitiated. Still, it will be the real fan who will appreciate the significance of the conclusion of the games. Action photographs, many of which are in color, appear throughout.
