This masterpiece of short fiction, narrated in first-person by a woman remembering a summer in her girlhood, is both a ghost story and a Kunstlerroman (novel of the artist's life) in miniature, in which Oliphant explores the possibilities and conflicts of a life dedicated to writing.

Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) published her first novel at twenty-one, and over the next five decades developed a career as one of Victorian Britain's most versatile and prolific writers. Widowed at thirty, she supported her three small children and soon her older brothers, a nephew, and nieces by publishing novels, essays, biographies, translations, reviews, and what she called "stories of the seen and unseen," including THE LIBRARY WINDOW.
