About the Author
Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) published her first novel at twenty-one, and over the next five decades developed a career as one of Victorian Britain's most versatile and prolific writers. Widowed at thirty, she supported her three small children and soon her older brothers, a nephew, and nieces by publishing novels, essays, biographies, translations, reviews, and what she called "stories of the seen and unseen," including THE LIBRARY WINDOW.

The big diamond blazed underneath in the hollow of her hand, like some dangerous thing hiding and sending out darts of light. The hand, which seemed to come almost to a point, with this strange ornament underneath, clutched at my half-terrified imagination . . .
