About the Author

Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) published her first novel at twenty-one, and over the next five decades developed a career as one of Victorian Britain's most versatile and prolific writers. Widowed at thirty, she supported her three small children and soon her older brothers, a nephew, and nieces by publishing novels, essays, biographies, translations, reviews, and what she called stories of the seen and unseen, including THE LIBRARY WINDOW.

I felt as if it might clutch me with sharp claws, and the lurking, dazzling creature bite--with a sting that would go to the heart.
