Born in a Jewish family, Maryam Kabeer was led to live in India and Nepal, and in monasteries in Europe, and then guided to embrace Islam at the hands of an ancient Sufi Master a few minutes away from the tomb of the Prophet Abraham. She then was guided to study intensively with Sufi Masters around the world. Her journey to the holy places and people of the earth, led her finally to Africa and the deep truth that all lives are totally interconnected and united with our own. This book is a significant and revealing social commentary, also dispelling many other myths and stereotypes such as the proposition, often fostered by the media, that women are inevitably oppressed in Islam. On the contrary, it is by entering into the heart of Islam that the author was liberated, elevated, empowered, and guided to realize the true purpose of her existence.

Maryam Kabeer Faye is a Sufi master and a frequent speaker on Islam and Sufism.
Throughout my childhood, I was aware of the existence of subtle realms, realities, and beings other than those of the apparent world in which I was living. I saw in one of many dreams that I was standing in the middle of a circle of seven ancient men who were blowing upon me, blessing and initiating me. This dream revealed the truth that I would meet such beings of light, who would initiate and lead me with the light of guidance. Even at this time, the spirit of guidance was manifesting in the outer world, just as it was within, and various people appeared as beacons in my life, exemplifying the message my father was singing about, the message of universal love, justice, unity, and peace, which was already, truly, singing in my heart.
One of these people was Sophie's father, Abe Wieselman. Abe was an extraordinary being who had a great influence on my formative years. He was inspired to go from country to country, especially to those countries where conflict and suffering prevailed.
He was somehow able to meet with heads of state, such as Ben Gurion, saying that he was an Ambassador of Peace. He was an ambassador not sent by any governmental agency but by peace itself. And wherever he went, with buoyant spirits, he delivered messages such as the following great poem.
"I want to be the One
I want to be the Proclaimer
That the world has finally
Concluded a true and noble peace.
I want to see ample food for everyone
On earth who is hungry.
I want to be the healer for everyone
On earth who is ill and ailing.
I want to be the smile on the face
Of everyone on earth.
I want to be the eyes for all the blind on earth.
I want to be friend to all the homeless
On earth.
