In this work, Prof. Meny Bergel, an eminent leprologist and member of the National Academy of Science, expounds his metabolic theory of leprosy. According to this, leprosy is not infectious or caused by Hansen's bacillus, but a lipid metabolism disorder - loss of auto-oxidation control - in which this bacillus only plays the role of an opportunistic germ and saprophyte. The pathogenic conception, therefore, does not leave room for antibiotics and chemotherapy. The fact that it is a revolutionary, highly heterodox work in leprology, in which extremely controversial ideas are developed, is why it should be read and, above all, meditated upon - a requirement of all unconventional works - with a calm, open and critical spirit and, as a basic prerequisite, with a strong measure of honesty. It is the author's prime wish that this work should reach noble and altruistic souls, as these were the qualities - nobility and altruism - that governed its writing. This small work represents a highly abridged synopsis of a hundred or so publications and four books, the fruit of half a century devoted to leprological research. The author's aim is that this book should act as the starting point of a copernican revolution in which the supposedly infectious nature of leprosy would become to be regarded as an outdated misconception. In this way, on the one hand, the debt that humanity owes to lepers would have been paid, albeit to a small extent, and on the other, the mythical element would have been taken out of this enigmatic disease.
