This book provides an approachable yet thorough introduction to the often complex field of public library administration.
Most careers require the wisdom that only comes from experience to avoid making critical errors; public library administration positions are no exception. The best way to avoid the pitfalls of public library administration without experiencing them firsthand is to take direction from someone experienced in the field.
Crash Course in Public Library Administration introduces librarians in rural or small urban areas to public administration as it applies to libraries. Regardless of whether the reader is currently a director or senior administrator, or wishing to be in such a role later, this information will help prepare them for a successful career in public library administration. The 15 chapters in this text provide basic overviews of key subjects like policies, budgeting, general planning, and facility management.

Wayne Disher spent over 20 years as a staff member at San Jose Public Library in San Jose, Calif. As Senior Librarian there, he managed the system's Adult Services as well as a collection budget of almost $10,000,000. Mr. Disher is currently Library Director for the City of Hemet Public Library in Hemet, Calif. He also teaches courses in Collection Development and Library Management for the San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science.
Written by a public library director, this entry in the Crash Course series focuses on the needs of rural and small libraries. Beginning with a discussion of local government and services and proceeding through chapters that discuss various aspects of public administration as it applies to libraries, the volume offers both philosophical principles and practical strategies and options. Perhaps the most useful chapters focus on budgeting and communicating. Others offer valuable suggestions on how to make decisions and how to collect and interpret data. By examining the library’s place within a larger political structure, author Disher offers a useful complement to guides that put the emphasis on internal management issues. His book will help both current administrators and those who aspire to senior management. --Patricia Hogan
