About the Author
Bob Turney was raised on a notorious housing estate in South London. At the age of 15 he was thrown on the scrapheap by the educational authorities who labelled him as an educational subnormal due to his dyslexia.
He became engulfed in a life of crime from a very early age, was on the peripheries of organised crime, and spent 18 years of his life drifting in and out of prisons. He ended up as a street drinker, addicted to cocaine and other narcotics and following a suicide attempt in1981 was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He was then transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he spent the next three months, and since his discharge has been completely alcohol and drug free.
26 years later, Bob s life is transformed. During that time he has worked extensively with people who have suffered from life controlling addictions. He attended the University of Reading where he gained an Honours degree in Forensic Social Work, before spending many years as a Probation Officer. He has continued to work with challenging and dangerous people both in prison and in the community.
He has also been an adviser and speech writer for a member of the House of Lords, and an adviser on penal reform to the government of Tony Blair.
