Laura Orsolini was born in Rome, Italy, where she received her art degree from the Istituto Europeo di Design. She also studied children s book illustration at the international summer school of Sarmede in Treviso, Italy. For ten years she worked with magazines and advertising agencies as a commercial illustrator. More recently, she has devoted her creative work almost exclusively to the writing and illustration of children s books, publishing nine books in five different countries. Samples of her work were selected for the 2006 Illustrators Exhibition at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. Laura is self-employed as a freelance artist, and she lives and works between Rome and Bangkok.
Joy Cowley is the award-winning author of over 40 books for children and young adults, including The Silent One, which The New York Times Educational Supplement hailed as a book "that will not be forgotten" and The Horn Book called "brilliantly evocative." Ms. Cowley is also the author of Singing Down the Rain, illustrated by Jan Spivey Gilchrist, and Starbright and the Dream Eater. Ms. Cowley lives in New Zealand.
PreS-Gr 1-Each of these titles explores a different emotional or personal trait, such as perseverance. However, the execution of plot often flounders. For example, the persevering Brown Bear lifts weights with rocks after a leg injury, which seems unwise. The art varies widely, as some illustrators are stronger than others. The art in Handy Mr. Hippo resembles that of Richard Scarry, while others, such as Lulu the Shy Piglet, seems rudimentary and amateurish. Each title includes a "Social and Emotional Learning Focus" page with practical exercises to help readers go deeper into each topic. Some classroom activities seem incomplete. For example, in Bubbly and Grumpy, a book about sharing, readers will find a very lackluster activity (writing down the names of five people they'd like to share with). An exercise helping children deal with shyness-making a treasure chest and writing down positive qualities on circles-seems slightly fuller, but there is nevertheless a lack of thoughtfulness. This series lacks focus in a major way.α(c) Copyright 2014. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
