When Barbara was growing up in the mountains of Kentucky, her grandfather told her wonderful stories about the Cherokee Indians, about the early settlers like Daniel Boone, and stories of scary mountain lions that often preyed on small children. Following that rich oral tradition, Barbara now gathers her own grandchildren together and tells them those stories, plus new ones of her own. The new ones they like the best are the ones I write down, she said. Barbara lives in Cincinnati with her husband Ethan. They spend their summers in a cottage near a lighthouse in Maine where the grandchildren love to visit. Last summer for the first time in her life, Barbara went fishing with her grandson, Zachary. He caught a striped bass. She caught part of an old lobster trap.
