About the Authors

ERIC VELASQUEZ is the author and illustrator of Grandma's Records and Grandma's Gift, a Pura Belpré Award winner. He is also the illustrator of The Price of Freedom; I, Matthew Henson, which received four starred reviews; Jesse Owens: Fastest Man Alive, which received two starred reviews; and The Piano Man, for which he won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award. R. Gregory Christie has illustrated many picture books, six of which recieved a Coretta Scott King Honor for Illustrator: The Palm of My Heart, Only Passing Through, Brothers in Hope, The Book Itch, Freedom in Congo Square, and Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

James Ransome is the acclaimed illustrator of more than twenty books for children, including The Creation, for which he received the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration. He lives with his family in upstate New York.

Bryan Collier is the Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award winner of numerous children's books, including Rosa and Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When he's not painting, he spends his time visiting schools and encouraging young artists and readers. Pat Cummings is the illustrator of more than thirty picture books, many of which she has written herself. She is a Coretta Scott King Award winner, whose books include Ananse and the Lizard and Angel Baby. Ms. Cummings teaches at Parson's School of Design and lives in Brooklyn with her husband.
