This is Richard's first ship as Master of the vessel. Although young, he proves himself capable of the position of Captain in the way he handles his ship in a storm, and handles the crew. As is true in most situations when a newcomer joins the group, the crew tests him. In all situations he proves himself capable, and eventually wins the respect of his crew. At Calcutta, he meets his Ma am s Indian family, and is introduced to his Indian (by adoption) side of the family. Richard also shows his ability to deal with passengers, first Mr. And Mrs. Wood, and late the owner's son, Charles. In all situations Richard applies the knowledge gained from his own experiences in dealing with both crew and passengers. When the ship finally reaches Boston again, he feels confident in his ability to command a ship.
