Formally published for the first time, Professor Sears's classic work reflects many years of continual evolution as a course study guide at the Graduate School of Aeronautical Engineering at Cornell University, with updates prepared by his former students to enhance ease of use by today's students. Instructors will find this a superb textbook for a first course in ideal aerodynamics and/or hydrodynamics. Readers will find fundamental concepts directly connected to practical applications in the numerous step-by-step examples found throughout the book.

WILLIAM R. SEARS was one of the greatest aerodynamicists of the twentieth century, who made significant and enduring contributions to education, aerodynamics, and aircraft design. He received his bachelor s degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Minnesota before studying under Theodore von Kármán at the California Institute of Technology. During World War II he served as Northrop s Chief of Aerodynamics and Flight Testing, where he led design of the P-61 Black Widow and YB-35 Flying Wing. Sears founded and directed the Graduate School of Aeronautical Engineering at Cornell University. In 1974 he joined the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. After his passing in 2002 the University of Arizona, with generous support from the Sears family, established the William R. Sears Memorial Lecture Series. The many professional honors bestowed upon Sears include the prestigious Prandtl Ring, the von Kármán Medal, and the Guggenheim Medal.
DEMETRI P. TELIONIS is Frank J. Maher Professor Emeritus in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was a student of William R. Sears at Cornell University where he received an M.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering.
