The Duncan family are magbeologists - those who study magical beasts. It seems that in book one their father found the Ancient Relic of Alchemy, a wheel with slots for magical items and Ruth found the first object, the Dragon Stone. Now their father is missing and the children are on a quest to find the second of the Twelve Ancient relics. They are sure that when the wheel is complete all magical beasts will be safe from extinction and they will find their father. This second relic is a vial of Elfin Elixir of Life which is running low. It is hidden by amphibian elfin-folk in an underwater cave near Aruba. This adventure is an exciting page turner. There is a sufficient danger for the children to attract most readers with a touch of magic added in. The writing is age appropriate without disrupting the flow. Also illustrated by Ami Blackford, the illustrations enhance the text and are delightful. Many are to be taken as technical drawings the children did of the magical beasts they encounter. A map on the end pages is included. Expect several sequels to complete this story. Highly recommended for grades 3-6. --Tri State Young Adult Book Review Committee, January 2008
