Like other books in the Half-and-Half series, originally published in France, this one begins with an illustrated fiction story and concludes with a longer section of related nonfiction. In this title’s opening narrative, an old sailor reminisces about a fishing adventure he had while helping out on a small boat as a boy. He and his companions watch as a girl on a nearby raft is put in danger by a shark and then saved by a dolphin. When the boy’s wicked captain threatens to harpoon the dolphin, the girl risks her life to save it. The nonfiction section includes information about sharks, rays, whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, walruses, and sea reptiles. Some of the double-page spreads, illustrated with colorful paintings and photos, offer paragraphs on various topics, while others provide activities for readers. No index is included. Though the book’s two sections are written and illustrated by different people, each part is engaging in its own way and does a good job of complementing the other. Grades 2-5. --Carolyn Phelan
