Alternately described by observers as looking like a frog, elephant, dog, pig, monkey, cow, seal, snail, or some combination thereof, the “loathsome worm” now known as “Nessie” was first seen in 565. This nicely produced volume tracks the development of the legend all the way up to the 2007 film The Water Horse. Kallen is particularly good at giving the stories—no matter how outlandish—historical focus, tracking how the sightings ebb and flow with world affairs. Sidebar boxes labeled “Did You Know?” and “Quote” pull out important points and serve as anchors for skimming readers. The illustrations are excellent, combining such well-worn artifacts as the famous black-and-white “Surgeon’s Photo” of Nessie’s head with several startling artists’ renderings of the creature that some speculate could be a prehistoric Pleiosaurus.
