About the Author

Rabbi Yehuda Herzl Henkin z”l, known as one of Israel’s leading poskim and a prolific writer, was the author of four volumes of Halachic Responsa – She’elot uTeshuvot Bnei Banim and the recently-published Mahalachim BaMikra, Essays on the Torah (Hebrew), as well as four books in English: Equality Lost: Essays in Torah Commentary, Halacha, and Jewish Thought (1999), New Interpretations on the Parsha (2001), Responsa on Contemporary Jewish Women’s Issues (2003), and Understanding Tzniut: Modern Controversies in the Jewish Community (2008). He was the grandson and student of the great sage R. Yosef Eliahu Henkin z”l. Rabbi Henkin received a B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University in New York. He lived in Israel since 1972, and served for six years as district rabbi of the Bet Shean Valley before he and his wife, Chana, made their home in Jerusalem. The Henkins’ lost their son Rabbi Eitam Henkin and his wife Naama in a terror attack in 2015.In 2018, Rabbi Henkin was awarded the prestigious Katz Prize for Torah literature, previously awarded to such luminaries as Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, Rabbi Shlomo Goren, Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Jacobovits, Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz, and Rabbi Professor Abraham Steinberg. Rabbi Henkin passed away in Jerusalem in December, 2020.
