A short biography of the life and career of fashion designer Anna Sui.

Known for her whimsical, wearable aesthetic, fashion designer Anna Sui has enjoyed a successful career in a notoriously capricious industry. This title in the Asian Americans of Achievement series begins with a bold leap of faith, when Sui left a secure company to strike out on her own, before tracking back through a chronological account of Sui's life. Darraj enlivens each well-researched chapter with numerous first-person quotes, and she shows that behind the whimsical designs is a serious businesswoman who has moved from fashion into fragrance, cosmetics, cell phones, and even collectible Barbies. Readers curious about Sui's personal life won't find much here; this is chiefly a professional portrait. But Darraj does show how Sui's famous friends and family have supported her work. Color photos and boxed sections on related subjects, from Manhattan's garment center to Sui's thoughts about how her cultural heritage informs her work, add further interest to this well-shaped biography, which gives a glimpse into fashion history and the creative process. A chronology, bibliography, and brief list of suggested resources conclude. Grades 7-10. --Gillian Engberg
