About the Author

Kathy Doughty began making quilts over 20 years ago after a move to Australia. She opened a patchwork shop in 2003, and eventually developed the popular Material Obsession shop with her husband/site photographer, John. Kathy lives in Sydney, Australia, with her family.

Review

Kathy Doughty's latest book, Adding Layers—Color, Design & Imagination, is being published by C&T Publishing this month. It features 15 of Kathy's new quilt projects, which are bound to inspire you to experiment with fabrics, tools and a range of quiltmaking techniques. (Australian Homespun Magazine, February 2014)

Australia-based quilter Doughty (Material Obsession) made a name for herself with modern interpretations of traditional quilt designs. Her latest collection is more of the same - reinterpreted traditional blocks using modern fabrics and old-fashioned techniques. Color, layout, and scale are the main themes of the book, and the sample quilts are scrappy riots of color at first glance, but further exploration shows the thoughtful layout behind the colorful chaos. Techniques range from both simple to curved piecing to Y-seams and are best suited to intermediate quilters, although an ambitious beginner could easily follow Doughty's instructions and attempt any of the projects. Handy tips for everything from efficient cutting to design and layout are included. VERDICT Australia is a hotbed of modern traditionalist quilting - Doughty and her contemporaries Sarah Fielke and Jen Kingwell are making a splash in the United States. Intermediate quilters who enjoyed the two Material Obsession books will gravitate to this one. (Library Journal, 3/15/14)

In her new book, Kathy explores different textiles, techniques and tools in a bid to expand the complexity of the quilts her readers create. Included are 15 of Kathy's quilt designs to inspire you and let you try something new. (Quilter's Companion Magazine, May/June 2014)

Kathy's book is your illustrated guide to developing an artful understanding of your quilting process. The projects will inspire you to experiment with textiles, tools, and techniques and add complexity to your designs. Traditional and modern styles of quilts are presented here, including bed-size quilts. (Quilter's Digest, June 2014)

This illustrated guide will help you add layers of complexity to your designs as you experiment with textiles, tools, and techniques. You'll develop an artful approach to your quilt making and create vibrant quilts that demand attention. (Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts, Summer 2014)

Color, pattern and artistry come together in this lovely collection of quilt designs in various styles that will appeal to modern and traditional quilters alike. Build your skills and unleash your creativity while making vibrant quilts you'll love. Fifteen quilt projects give opportunities for working with your stash, working with templates and working with scale. (Quilters Newsletter, August/September 2014)
