One day, I was browsing at a bird show, playing with the idea of maybe one day getting a parrot for a pet. The minute Shadow (as I later named her) saw me, she ran up my arm and bit my ear. She was the one who picked me out. I knew I had to take her home with me.
I was fascinated by Shadow's playful habits and affectionate nature, and by all the different ways she used her beak and feet to eat, preen, play, and do all the things that a parrot needs to do. Just like the parrots in the book, Shadow really does climb curtains, eat broccoli, and enjoy baths. In fact, all the things in the book are things I have really seen parrots do. I hope my book will inspire readers to love parrots the way I do and to understand the responsibilities, as well as the joys, of bringing a pet parrot into your life.
