This concrete textbook is for use in a fundamental reinforced concrete design class in a civil engineering curriculum. It assumes student basic knowledge of strength of materials or solid mechanics and structural analysis. This textbook contains the basic chapters for concrete design which are flexural, shear, bond, serviceability, columns and footing as well as more advanced topics including retaining walls, torsion, two-way slabs, continuity in reinforced concrete structure, and seismic design and detailing. An important aspect of this book is that it introduces the reader to the concepts of structural design. This is accomplished by review of applicable building codes and methods of determining design load and member strength. Thus, this textbook can also be used for foundation class in structural design principles.
