Reviews

The cover of each new title in the Amazing Animals series—a big, beautiful close-up of the subject—will immediately draw in animal lovers. Large, appealing photos on each spread include more vivid close-ups, showing both animals’ faces as well as the creatures in action. Across from the photos, the text is laid out cleanly in a large, clear font, and the sentences are simple and easy to read. Photo captions, meanwhile, add interesting facts, while occasional vocabulary words are defined at the bottoms of pages. At the end of each book, the author retells a myth or story about that kind of animal. In Camels, it is a brief version of a Rudyard Kipling short story from Just So Stories. The books’ overall content occasionally feels a bit thin, with generic cultural material (for example, about whale watching) taking up space that might have been used for more substantive animal facts. However, these books do present the basics in an engaging way appropriate for young readers. Grades 1-3. --Miriam Aronin
