When their planet faces destruction, the simian-like Cenceti flee in thousands of ships piloted by a master computer designed to watch over and guide them. When a new homeworld is discovered and preparations are made to abandon the fleet, the now sentient computer realizes it cannot assist them if they leave. After unsatisfactorily trying to convince the Cenceti to stay in space, the computer lashes out at it's creators and destroys them.
Now, after years of roaming the universe and unsuccessfully interacting with dozens of species, the computer has picked up signals from another sentient species; a species in desperate need of protection. Following the signals, the computer turns its fleet of spider-shaped ships toward the planet Earth. How will the human's react to the alien computer...and will it be able to finally fulfill its programming To Aid and Protect?

"Acknowledged," Jackie replied. She banked her fighter to the right as three arapods tried to hit her head on; the computer still had not learned that tactic did not work - logic insisted that it would. Her Tomcat banked away, giving her wingman a perfect kill shot on one of her three pursuers. One sidewinder heat-seeking missile lashed out and formed a fireball where the lead arapod had been a moment before. The other pods broke and circled, trying for a kill shot of their own on the F-14s.
One of the alien ships managed to get on the tail of MC just as he lased the second of the three vessels. His RIO yelled for evasive as red bolts zipped past the cockpit canopy. "Hold on," MC called calmly, "I saw this in a movie once!" The F-14 began to slow as MC applied the airbrakes and flaps; the pilot yanked back on the joystick and raised the nose of the fighter. "Hit the brakes and he'll fly right past us!" he said in a distant voice.
"Your gonna what?" cried his RIO, then realization struck home. "You are NOT Tom Cruise!"
The pilot only grinned maniacally as the arapod roared underneath the stalling Tomcat. MC pushed the stick forward - bringing the nose down - and released the airbrakes; aligning his fighter perfectly on the tail of the now fleeing alien spider ship. MC fired two bursts of green energy beams.
