Grade 5-8?Brief, colorful, capsulized information on the geography, history, economy, government, culture, and people of these two countries. Emphasizing geographic and cultural distinctions, each book includes "A Closer Look..." section that highlights specific people, places, issues, conflicts, and traditions that make that country unique. Occasionally, the authors' choices seem a bit idiosyncratic. In England, a "Love for Animals" section discusses ducks on Downing Street and a hospital for hedgehogs but not the horse-loving, equestrian tradition of the British. Similarly, in Australia, a "Plants and Animals" page mentions only mammals. The extraordinary bird and snake varieties are omitted. A separate chapter in each book on "Relations with North America" examines the historical, social, and economic impact of contact with the United States and Canada. Although more history can be found in comparable titles in the "Enchantment of the World" series (Children's) and more comprehensive cultural information is contained in the "Cultures of the World" series (Marshall Cavendish), these books will provide students with a solid introduction. A list of recommended books, videos, and Web sites add a useful, contemporary dimension for further research.
