Lucy Schall is a retired high school and middle school teacher, a book reviewer for VOYA, and author of numerous Libraries Unlimited booktalking guides.
Schall presents booktalks for 110 titles in seven categories: "Issues," "Contemporary," "Action/Adventure/Survival," "Mystery/Suspense," "Fantasy," "Heritage," and "Multiple Cultures." Each entry includes complete bibliographic information, a summary, and a plethora of additional information, including a sample booktalk, suggestions for suitable read-aloud or "talkback" sections, links for alternate booktalks, and links to discussion questions or author questions. Five read-alikes are listed after each title, with bibliographic information. The majority of these have a booktalk available from one of the author's previous titles. Novice booktalkers will be able to find a wide variety of books and styles, although with the prominence and prevalence of the CCSS, it's too bad that so little nonfiction is included.-Betsy Fraser, Calgary Public Library, Canadaα(c) Copyright 2013. More than a simple advertisement for a title, interactive booktalks call for the presenter to engage the listener at a higher level, seamlessly integrating brief audience feedback alongside standard plot summary and appeal factors. With entries on more than 100 books from the last five years, Teen Talkback is a useful guide for even experienced YA librarians and booktalkers. Titles are separated into seven main genres and then further narrowed by two or three themes. Each entry includes booktalking basics: a summary, a values statement, and an interactive script. Experienced author and instructor Schall provides added value with “Read Aloud/Talkback” recommendations, annotated read-alikes, and web addresses for discussion guides and book trailers. Further strengthening the book’s secondary use as a readers’-advisory tool, the full index includes appeal terms alongside genres, authors, and titles. Recommended for public and middle- and high-school libraries. --Genevieve Grove
