Mushrooms and garlic go together like a horse and carriage, so The Marriage of Mushrooms and Garlic is a perfect title for this superb collection of essays and recipes from two of the world’s leading experts. What Chester Aaron and Malcolm Clark don’t know about garlic and mushrooms respectively likely doesn’t matter, anyway. With the help of skilled chefs Suzanne Adams and Pic Sangsana, and filled with the fabulous photographic art of Roger Adams, they have produced a small book worth its weight in delicious information.

Chester Aaron was born in Butler, Pennsylvania in 1923 and graduated from Butler High School in 1941. After working in steel mills for two years he enlisted in the US Army, where he served as a heavy machine gunner in a Heavy Weapons Company of the 20th Armored Division. He participated in the liberation of the concentration camp at Dachau. After the war, he earned his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and his masters degree at San Francisco State University. After working for ten years as chief X-Ray technician at a hospital in Berkeley, he accepted a position as a professor in the English Department at Saint Mary’s College of California. While working at Saint Mary’s, he was also a garlic farmer. For more than 35 years he grew some 60 varieties of garlic from 20 different countries. He has published three books about garlic-farming. Two of those were memoirs. He has also published 20 novels, both adult and young adult, and short stories in Coast Lines, North American Review, Texas Quarterly, and the MANOA Journal (University of Hawaii). Chester lives in Occidental, California. Malcolm Clark was born and educated in the United Kingdom; his life has evolved around various fields of natural science. He has worked and studied in several countries on several continents, including Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. After working in various biological laboratories, he decided to make a radical detour and emigrated to the United States. With partner David Law, he founded a specialty mushroom cultivating company in northern California called Gourmet Mushrooms Inc. and, several years later, another in Europe named Mycology Research Laboratories; he is still actively involved. In the late eighties, Malcolm opened a restaurant with partner Brian Lau called Truffle in the California town of Sebastopol. It was an instant success and received many magazine and newspaper food column write-ups. Alas, the mushroom operation became more and more demanding, and three years after opening, they decided to sell the restaurant. Over the years, Malcolm has been invited to be a guest speaker at various mushroom conferences in Europe, Asia and North America and has always maintained that practicing the art of science was key to his success. Now semi-retired, he divides his time between homes in the northern California wine country and Chiang-Mai, northern Thailand and pursues his second passion—growing and breeding orchids and traveling to exotic destinations.
