Four and a half years in the making, the volume is a tribute to both del Toro's unrelenting imagination and his rarely matched craft for the film of transformation. From his unique mastery of color and use of shadow, to his awareness of our primal hunger for myths and monsters, he has changed the basis for what we expect from film. But the volume is also a record of his actors' and crew's devotion to his moviemaking which, despite all its extreme challenges, has become in memory (for many of them, as heard in their interviews) the most most spiritual work in their careers.

About the Author

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Guillermo del Toro is the director of the films Cronos, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy I, Hellboy II, and Pan's Labyrinth, which garnered enormous critical praise worldwide and won three Academy Awards.

Recipient of the Shirley Jackson Prize and the World Fantasy Award, as well as a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award, Editor Danel Olson teaches at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas, and is a PhD candidate on ghosts & terrorism  at University of Stirling, Scotland. He writes on Gothic fiction (21st Century Gothic: Great Gothic Novels Since 2000) and debuts short stories (Exotic Gothic I-V). His regular column in print on comics and graphic novels in Weird Fiction Review is called "Casket Letters." A diehard fan of del Toro ever since Cronos, Olson's recent film studies also include Centipede Press's 'The Exorcist': Studies in the Horror Film (2011) and Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining': Studies in the Horror Film (2015), which The Washington Post calls "A major contribution to film history and scholarship."
