Synopsis

Most people want to leave some sort of ‘monument’ behind when they die. It may be financial, physical, organisational or some other memory. Obituary list different monuments established by famous people and we can sometimes gasp at how much one person has achieved in their lives. But what about us ordinary people? Nobody will write an obituary for us and we have to face the fact that most people leave this earth with little fanfare. I meet many people who are frustrated in their Christian walk because they feel unable to do something significant with their lives. They do not expect flowery obituaries or huge memorial services, but would like to feel they have contributed something. They say things like, ‘It is only the young people who get a chance in our group.’ ‘The older people do not trust us, so they give us nothing to do.’ ‘The church doesn’t give me anything to do’; ‘I really tried to do…. But nobody was interested.’ They are looking in the wrong direction. Our neighbourhoods and offices are filled with people who need what only you can give them. In an age of broken marriages, absent fathers and dysfunctional families, there has never been a greater need for spiritual fathers and mothers to reach out to younger men and women who are floundering in the confusions of life. Christianity was always designed to be built using this method, but the need today is greater than ever because there is such an absence of natural fathering. This book explains how you can start building ‘monuments’ in another person’s life. It encourages you to ‘make your mark’ on an individual whom the Lord brings into your life. It demonstrates how you can leave a living legacy which can last for generations. After Dawson Trotman wrote the words above, he then added his own prayer, ‘Oh Lord, help me build men, strong, holy, prepared men to go to the four corners of the world who will do the same.’ That is my prayer for you. The kingdom needs you!
