Prepare to be whisked away to foreign lands in the Folktales from around the World series. Each title presents a story native to a particular country or continent through simple text (which begins with “Once upon a time” or “Many years ago”) and illustrations that stylistically represent the culture. In the African folktale How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have?, a vain leopard asks various animals—including a tortoise, a monkey, and an eagle—to count his spots, but none can keep track or count high enough until Jackal comes up with a solution. A world map, with the featured country highlighted and labeled, appears at the end of each entry along with a one-page afterword that explains common characteristics of folktales, from the prevalence of magical elements to their moralistic nature, as well as basic country facts. A nice introduction to the oral storytelling tradition for both classroom settings and one-on-one sharing. Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley
