In 1988, prompted by severe depression and resurf¬acing memories, Marj¬orie McKinnon entered a program for recovery from incest, a journey that took almost five years to complete. During that time, she wrote about her experience, a chronicle of going from a place of despair to one of joy. That book, titled I Never Heard A Robin Sing was her first attempt to get published. Unable to sell it, she spent the next five years developing a program on recovery from child sexual abuse. Despite being a non-professional, it was her belief that a program devised by someone who had walked the same road would be a sensitive and pragmatic resource. She titled that self-published book, REPAIR Your Life: A Program for Recovery from Incest & Childhood Sexual Abuse and used it as an accompaniment to seminars she taught in the Los Angeles area. Victor Volkman of Loving Healing Press has published REPAIR Your Life as well as REPAIR For Kids, REPAIR For Toddlers, REPAIR For Teens and The REPAIR Your Life Workbook as well as a post recovery book, It s Your Choice! Decisions That Will Change Your Life. In the last ten years, Marjorie has completed a fiction trilogy that follows the life of Kathleen McGuire whose spirit guide, Jake, provides her with wisdom and direction from another world as she gets herself in and out of trouble. Three nonfiction works, Mystical Experiences: Tales of The Inner Light, A Common Sense Spiritual Path, and her memoir, I Never Heard A Robin Sing, as well as a mystery novel, When First We Practice to Deceive and a fiction work titled: Here Lies, are all completed. They are all available on amazon.com as Kindle books soon to be available in paperback. She also has four volumes of poetry available as Kindle books on amazon.com, soon to be available in paperback as well. She is working on Hello, My Name is Marjorie, a sprightly and often humorous email account of her courtship with Tom McKinnon, her husband, whom she met on the Internet while doing genealogy research for the McKinnon clan (her name was also McKinnon). Marjorie is currently available for speaking engagements and is the founder of The Lamplighter Movement, an international movement for victims of incest and child sexual abuse that emphasizes the importance of REPAIRing the damage. Most are using the REPAIR program as a model for recovery. Feeling that a movement of one voice would give more power to survivors, she hopes one day to have Lamplighter chapters all over the world. As of the end of 2014, there are eighty-one chapters in ten countries. If you would like to find the nearest one or consider starting your own chapter, then please take a few moments to visit the Lamplighter s website
Marjorie McKinnon is a wonder woman and once you hear Marjorie's story you will understand. At an early age, she was raped by her own father. After suffering years of abuse, she finally ran away from home, only to find herself in a deadly cycle of abusive relationships. Only after years of self-discovery and relying on her own desire to overcome her past has she at last found peace. It was during her years of trying to find that peace that she developed her own recovery system. Also out of all that tragedy, Marjorie has reached out to other victims by establishing The Lamplighters organization. With over ninety chapters world¬wide, Marjorie is able to touch the lives of so many, helping them find the way out of their own dark circumstances. --Nanci Arvizu, Page Readers
As we all know, many adults who were sexually abused as children never received any help or therapy for this abuse. The result, as pointed out in this book, is often picking an abusive mate and the cycle continues. Ms. McKinnon s book points out what it takes to recognize and recover from the damage done to a person as a child. Though certainly more detailed than the children's books, the steps are similar though developed further for the use of adults. The author reveals her own experiences to let the reader know that she truly understands what they are going through and that she also knows the best way to overcome what the childhood abuse has done to her. Highly recommended! --Maria Edwards, American Authors Association
If you or someone you care about is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this book should prove invaluable to your recovery. Most people realize that childhood sexual abuse is traumatic, but not everyone understands or recognizes the serious and often life-long effects. The author of this valuable book, Marjorie McKinnon, has written extensively about how survivors can work to move beyond the trauma of abuse. With hard work and patience, it can be done. She pulls no punches, and never trivializes the difficulty of dealing with this problem. She has set the program forward with a really useful acronym, REPAIR, to illustrate the steps survivors and their friends and family or therapist need to take to begin the process of healing. Written in a style that is very easy to understand and to follow, the survivor will work through six different steps to recovery. --Lauri Crumley Coates, MH Review
