From the Back Cover

In what does the difference between analog and digital consist?
What are the benefits of a digital solution with respect to a parallel analog solution?
This is not a purely intellectual conundrum since managers and politicians make conspicuous investments in analog and digital infrastructures and systems. Scientists from different fields are searching for the appropriate definition of what is digital and analog, but the profile of the technologies that have changed mankind’s lifestyle and the history of the world still resist the scrutiny of thinkers.

The present work deriving from a long-term theoretical inquiry suggests some keys to interpret the digital and the analog machines.
The author claims that understanding analog versus digital is not as easy as comparing the adjectives digital/continuous or natural/artificial, and conducts an accurate analysis of the systems’ core. Frequently the author follows an historical perspective and does not refrain from comments on linguistics, anthropology, psychology, and other fields related to the information domain.

Rocchi is a docent and scientist of IBM and is currently working in various fields of research. He is an author not new to original proposals and this book is consistent with his intriguing style.

Review

"PaoloRocchi's book Logic of Analog and Digital Machines explores some ofthe issues that arise when we think about analogue and digital technology, andmight help us to understand why this shift away from analogue representation todigital seems so prominent right now. Rocchi is interested in exploring the differentnature of analogue and digital representation of information in general, andhis many years of experience working with IBM has enabled him to develop a setof scientific and engineering perspectives on the different nature of analogueand digital ways of doing things that is the main topic of this book.... Significantconclusions are set out clearly on their own line, and numbered for further reference. The figures are often schematic diagrams of the kind one would expect to findin a scientific paper. However, although the discussion regularly hinges onmathematical and mathematical-like formulae, .... its main arguments cancertainly be understood by those without a significant mathematical background."
