About the Author

David F. Chang, MD, is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, and has a private practice specializing in cataract surgery in Los Altos, California. Dr. Chang graduated from Harvard College and earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.    

An internationally acclaimed cataract expert, Dr. Chang is the recipient of the highest international awards for cataract surgery from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Kelman Lecture), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (Binkhorst Medal), the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (Lim Medal), the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (Award of Excellence), the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (Rayner Medal), the Indian Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society (Gold Medal), and the Italian Ophthalmological Society (Strampelli Medal). In 2006, he became the third ophthalmologist to ever receive the Charlotte Baer Award honoring the outstanding clinical faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco Medical School.    

Serving as president in 2012, Dr. Chang is on the executive committee of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the largest international specialty organization for cataract and refractive surgeons. He also chairs the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s national committee, which writes the clinical guidelines for cataract surgery that are used in the United States and in many foreign countries. Dr. Chang serves on the medical advisory board of 4 global humanitarian organizations: the ASCRS Foundation, Himalayan Cataract Project, Help Me See, and Project Vision. Through the latter, he cofounded a program for American ophthalmologists to teach modern cataract techniques to eye surgeons working in charity eye hospitals in China.   

Dr. Chang is the author/editor of 4 best-selling textbooks on cataract surgical techniques for ophthalmologists. Mastering Refractive IOLs covers advanced lens implants such as multifocal, accommodating, and toric lenses and is considered the most comprehensive textbook on the subject. He served for 5 years as Chief Medical Editor of Cataract &Refractive Surgery Today, and is currently the Chief Medical Editor for EyeWorld, a leading trade journal that has a global circulation of more than 30,000 ophthalmologists.
