Synopsis
In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy hammered the Caribbean and eastern United States, leaving a long trail of destruction in its path. Powerful winds snapped trees and shattered windows. At high tide on October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck the northeastern coast of the United States. Sandy began a week earlier as a small tropical storm in the Caribbean, and as it grew, it swept over several islands, leaving homes flooded and trees uprooted. It gained momentum in the Atlantic, before striking the coast of New Jersey and New York City. Massive waves pounded the area, grinding life to a halt. Flooded subways, demolished houses, and disrupted power left a highly populated area changed forever. As millions watched the cataclysmic event unfold on television, affected residents were left with little to nothing other than assessing their lives and futures. Here—with the help of large, red topical headings; colorful charts; breathtaking captioned photographs; poignant quotes from survivors, some of them profiled at length; and a readable narrative—readers meet residents who weathered the storm.
