After instructions for harvesting basil leaves, the cooking section offers illustrated lists of ingredients, tools, and terms such as julienne and stir-fry. From basil Parmesan dip to lemon-basil cake, the six recipes are nicely varied and the finished dishes look enticing. On the downside, the icon-based safety warning system makes the chancy assumption that children will read the “Safety First” box on the copyright page, which explains that certain icons mean “ask an adult for help!” Actually, kids will require adult help with all the recipes, which use equipment such as sharp knives, frying pans, and 500-degree ovens.
