I wrote this book after my first husband moved out of our house. During the long weekends when my daughters were with him, I sat at my keyboard and wrote Annie's story. She was and is one of my favorite characters--she's so full of doubt and worry, just like me. Also, like me, she has a passion for an art form (cooking) that isn't always an easy path. I love the way she mothers Alder and her big, soft heart. I poured a lot of my love for my daughters into their story. A single mom trying like crazy to make a good life for her little boy.
It broke my heart to write Drake's story. What happens to him is every parent's worst nightmare. His decision to hide away from the world and wither away to nothing is completely understandable. Yet, he learns to live again when he falls in love with Annie and Alder. To me, this is a story of the ultimate redemption through love. Our painful past is not erased and it certainly informs our present, but if we're offered love, we must always take it. To love is to live.
