After successful careers as a criminal defense attorney, higher education administrator and instructor, and day spa manager, Allan Ament now enjoys retirement with his wife, an award-winning journalist and author, and a semi-neurotic cat (is there any other kind?). They live on an island in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, where in addition to writing and being his wife’s primary caregiver, Ament serves as board chair for the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts (nila.edu). His work has previously appeared in academic, professional, and literary journals, and is included in an upcoming anthology, Being: What Makes a Man. This is his first book-length work. www.facebook.com/allanamentauthor allanament.com
"a beautiful and insightful memoir about the author's experiences as a caregiver to his wife after she experiences a stroke. Deloris, Allan's wife of eighteen years, suffered a stroke in 2005....would highly recommend this book for anyone with family member of close friend who has experienced a stroke....[it] will make you laugh and cry, but most of all, have a deeper understanding and respect for those caring for family members with medical needs." Heather Osborn, Readers' Favorite.com
"Well-read and analytical, Ament gives thoughtful articulation to what many caregivers must be going through. He also describes the stress and utter exhaustion of this full-time effort and the wild swings of emotions he feels, including his anger and impatience when she is slow to get ready for a meeting or appointment....
[Ament] . . . eloquently demonstrate[s], when we are fully engaged and meet the challenges head on, something can be learned about ourselves and the people we love -- something even sublime."
The Seattle Times
While the memoir is as much an account of caring for a loved one and is focused on Ament's experience in tending to his wife's needs, there is a universality in the narrative that should touch readers. . . .
With a natural flow in narrative and an ear for the senses, Ament paints three-dimensional scenes and recreates realistic dialogue to fully draw in readers. Beautifully paced and detailed throughout

This author can really tell it like it is. He gives voice to all the people who are family caregivers. . . who may think they aren't handling things like they should. He helps you to know that the frustrations or feeling that come when faced with this life change are very real and okay . . . I was touched by the love he has for his wife, and the willingness he had to change and understand her better. Great to hear the man's point of view.
