Ann approached the nurse cautiously. “Nurse, may I talk to you?” The nurse put a forefinger to her lips. Orteig had his back turned.

“Dr. Keefer is on the line,” the nurse said to Ann. “He’s in charge.”

“Dr. Keefer?” Orteig said, pushing the button for one line. Apparently, there was no one there. He pushed another. “Dr. Keefer. Yes. What’s this about a quarantine?” Morton was still standing by the blue glass, his face pressed against it. “What does he mean?” Ann asked the nurse.

“Dr. Keefer’s been in contact with the Disease Control Center,” she whispered. “There have been other cases like Gordi’s. That’s good, Mrs. Skerit; we may get answers from other cases.”

“What’s the prognosis on the Macon girl?” Orteig pressed his body into the wall, shielding the phone from the others. Ann could still hear him. “I see. All right. And the boy in Tucson?”

“How many others?” Morton asked, turning from the window. The nurse shrugged. “How many others?” he repeated.

Orteig suddenly appeared agitated. “But if Atlanta runs things, we’ll be wrapped in plastic for days. What? Oh, all right.” He hung up and stared at the floor.

Ann moved over to him. “The other children. What happened?”

Orteig lifted his gaze to hers, then glanced at Morton. Ann saw the scene in her mind again: Gordi slumped on the floor, the open screen door, the spilled lunch box and the baseball mitt, the rush of the wind.

Dr. Orteig had a strange, nervous look in his eye. “It’s too early to draw any firm conclusions, Mrs. Skerit. With several other cases like Gordi’s reported, we come under national jurisdiction. Viral paranoia. Who knows. We’ll just have to do our best.” He was at the door leading to the detox room.

“But, the other cases . . . how are they?” Ann asked. “Nurse. Bring some cots in for the Skerits.”

“Doctor, please answer me.” Her resolute tone caused Orteig to stop, look over his shoulder.

The calculating rodent suddenly looked afraid. “No further news on cases elsewhere,” Orteig said. “But official word from Macon and Tucson . . .” He hesitated. Ann’s eyes brimmed with tears again. “Tell me.” Orteig spoke quietly, forming each word with clinical precision. “Both patients died several hours ago.”
