Reviews

Although most books in the Our Solar System series spotlight individual planets, this one looks at the five dwarf planets (Pluto, Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris) together. Ring explains how the discovery of planetlike objects in the Kuiper Belt led to the 2006 revised definition of planet and reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet. Through short discussions, Ring considers topics such as the position of dwarf planets in the solar system, how they were discovered, and the origins of their mythology-inspired names. An appended activity shows the relative distances of the earth and the Kuiper Belt from the sun. Although clearly written, the book's use of short sentences with similar construction leads to some choppy-sounding paragraphs. Brightly illustrated with photos as well as NASA images of space objects, this provides a short, useful introduction to dwarf planets. Grades 3-5. --Carolyn Phelan
