The Science Kids: Seasons series presents basic information about the four seasons in a way that is perfect for beginning readers or prereaders. Each book begins with a simple, clear diagram of the seasonal cycle. The rest of the book includes large, beautiful photos that are a treat for both adult and child readers. Spring’s photos are full of soft green trees and plants. It is worth keeping in mind, though, that not all readers will live in climates like the ones described in the books. For example, in a Mediterranean-type climate, winter may be the rainiest season, not spring. This quibble aside, the books are effective. Each one concludes with a quiz question related to six photos from the book. These open-ended questions can provoke discussion with prereaders or help keep beginning readers engaged. Additional activities such as simple word finds and crossword puzzles, available online, are appropriate and fun for beginning readers as well. Preschool-Grade 1. --Miriam Aronin
