The title of this work refers to the need for modern philosophy to move beyond the traditional assessments and recommendations regarding moral actions. Nietzsche offers instead a new perspective whereby modern persons can assess ethics and the ethical systems that underlie them. At the same time he also accuses prior ethical systems of accepting basic assumptions about morality without rigor, taking them to task for lazy and wishful philosophies. The ideas in Beyond Good and Evil should be examined by anyone who has an interest in ethics, and they are essential reading for those who would learn about meta-ethics. Even when readers may find Nietzsche to be wrong in their estimate, this work still casts light onto areas that seldom otherwise get examined.

From the Back Cover:
After kicking open the doors to twentieth-century philosophy in Thus Spake Zarathustra, Friedrich Nietzsche refined his ideal of the superman with the 1886 publication of Beyond Good and Evil. Conventional morality is a sign of slavery, Nietzsche maintains, and the superman goes beyond good and evil in action, thought, and creation. Nietzsche especially targets what he calls a "slave morality" that fosters herdlike quiescence and stigmatizes the "highest human types." In this pathbreaking work, Nietzsche's philosophical and literary powers are at their height: with devastating irony and flashing wit he gleefully dynamites centuries of accumulated conventional wisdom in metaphysics, morals, and psychology, clearing a path for such twentieth-century innovators as Thomas Mann, André Gide, Sigmund Freud, George Bernard Shaw, André Malraux, and Jean-Paul Sartre, all of whom openly acknowledged their debt to him. Students of philosophy and literature as well as general readers will prize this rich sampling of Nietzsche's thought in an unabridged and inexpensive edition of one of the philosopher's most important works. Dover (1997) unabridged republication of the Helen Zimmern translation. Publisher's Introduction.
About the Author:

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was born in the village of Röcken in Saxony on October 15, 1844. Nietzsche, whose father was a Lutheran pastor, spent a year as a theology student at the University of Bonn, before studying classical philology at the University of Leipzig. Despite poor health and desperate loneliness, Nietzsche managed to produce a book (or a book-length supplement to an earlier publication) every year from 1878 to 1887. In early January 1889, he collapsed in the street in Turin, Italy, confused and incoherent. He spent the last eleven years of his life institutionalized or under the care of his family.
