Composite Materials for Aircraft Structures, Third Edition covers nearly every technical aspect of composite aircraft structures, including raw materials, design, analysis, manufacture, assembly, and maintenance.
Updated throughout, it features new material related to the areas of design, manufacture, and application to primary structure and through-life support that have advanced significantly over the past decade. Notable examples of significant civil aircraft usage of advanced composites now in service include the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787, with several others soon to join them.
Thirty years after initial publication, Composite Materials for Aircraft Structures, Third Edition continues to provide both university students and practicing aerospace engineers with an introductory text and reference book on composite structures. The many chapter authors are experts in their fields and collectively represent enormous expertise based on extensive practical experience and theoretical knowledge of composites relevant to aircraft structures.

Alan A. Baker is a Senior Research Consultant for Advanced Composite Structures Australia and Emeritus Research Leader Aerospace Composite Structures, in the Aerospace Division of the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group. He has over 45 years experience in advanced composites including 10 years in the Rolls Royce UK Advanced Research Laboratory. He is recognized for pioneering work on bonded composite repair of metallic aircraft components for which he has received many awards, including the 1990 Australian Government Minister's Award for Achievement in Defence Science, the 1999 Royal Aeronautical Society (Australia) Lawrence Hargrave Award, the 1999 Royal Aeronautical Society (UK) Specialist Gold Medal, the 2011 Engineers Australia AGM Michell Medal, and in 2015 he was elected as a World Fellow of the International Committee on Composite Materials.
Murray L. Scott is Chairman of Advanced Composite Structures Australia, the specialist engineering spin-out company of the world renowned Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures, of which he was Chief Executive Officer for over 13 years. He is an Adjunct Professor of RMIT University and has 35 years aerospace engineering experience working in both industry and academia. He is a long-standing World Fellow and has served as President (2001-03) of the International Committee on Composite Materials. Since 1994, he has represented Australia on the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences and has served in various capacities, including as President (2013-14). He continues to focus on developing new technologies for the design, low-cost manufacture, and support of application-critical composite structures in aerospace and other fields.
...unlike other textbooks, this one is written not by a single author or a pair of co-authors, but by a large team of contributors from many universities and research institutions, predominantly from Australia, but also from Malaysia and USA. It is to the editors' great credit that the book does not feel like a patchwork of separate chapters but a volume that speaks with one voice and reflects a shared vision underpinned by vast theoretical knowledge and practical expertise of the team. --The Aeronautical Journal
