Synopsis

Grab your crayons and your backpack for a fantastical journey through The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book, sixty-four pages illustrating twenty-six words that highlight memorable victories and collective moments in LGBTQP (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, and Pansexual) culture.

The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book is Jacinta Bunnell’s fourth book in the Queerbook Committee series of coloring books (including Girls Are Not Chicks and Sometimes the Spoon Runs Away with Another Spoon) and the first with acclaimed illustrator Leela Corman (Unterzakhn). As you add your own extraordinary colors to these pages, we hope you are left asking, “Isn’t everything fabulous in this world just a little bit gay?” This notion is celebrated on every unique page, made up of inked and framed line drawings with beautiful typography, reminiscent of a handsomely designed vintage children’s alphabet book.

Each day, we take another step toward a greater understanding of gender fluidity, gender diversity, and sexual orientation. Change does not come easily or unfold overnight. But together we are an unflappable squad of comrades staring down oppression while stopping to make art and find joy along the way.

About the Authors

This is Jacinta Bunnell’s fourth coloring book in the collection known as the Queerbook Committee. Jacinta is an artist, writer, and teacher who cofounded a philanthropic fancy-costumed ladies arm-wrestling league in the Hudson Valley. She lives among some very debonair coyotes, bears, rabbits, unicorns, extraordinary humans, zinnias, and rhododendron bushes.

Leela Corman is the author and illustrator of Queen’s Day and Unterzakhn. She is an accomplished belly dancer and belly dance instructor. Corman is a cofounder of The Sequential Artists’ Workshop, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prosperity and promotion of comic art and artists in Gainesville, Florida, where she is also an adjunct instructor at the University of Florida.”

INTRODUCTION

The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book illustrates twenty-six words that highlight memorable victories, collective moments, and ordinary schemes in LGBTQP (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and pansexual) culture. We invite you to take your crayons out of your holsters and embark on a fantastical journey inside this book, to a place where everyone knows at least one downy unicorn and wakes up to find glitter on the soles of their slippers in the sparingly lit hours of the morning. As you add your own extraordinary colors to these pages, we hope you are left asking, "Isn't everything fabulous in this world just a little bit gay?" This book celebrates this notion on every unique page.

Each day, we take another step toward a greater understanding of gender fluidity, gender diversity, and sexual orientation. Change does not come easily or unfold overnight. But together we are an enduring and dedicated squad of comrades staring down oppression until it melts under our unwavering, unmasked gaze, stopping periodically to feel ecstatic gratefulness for the lives we are living among some purely exquisite and passionate souls.

You are a fetching mythical animal, a precious gem, as brilliant and radiant as the stars. Thank you for being you and inviting us to be part of your world. This is our zeitgeist.
