"The Intercultural Communication Guidebook: Research-based Strategies for Successful Interactions is a guide to successfully interacting with people from different cultures and thus developing satisfying relationships. Conversational in tone, the book illustrates concepts with examples from the world of everyday experience. Students become familiar with relevant research, theories that explain and predict, strategies that work, and suggestions on how and when to use these strategies.
Using the most recent data and studies, the book discusses intercultural interactions from the perspectives of the participants, emphasizing the importance of knowing both oneself and others. Topics include identity management, negotiation, and developing cultural competency in a variety of situations. These situations range from casual social encounters to the more permanent relationships between immigrants and host cultures in business and political negotiations, group and organizational communication, and communications moderated by mass and internet media. An informed blend of theory that explains what works in communication and why, research-based evidence, and suggestions for practical use, The Intercultural Communication Guidebook is suitable for undergraduate courses in intercultural communication, global communication, and communication and diversity. Alexis Tan, who earned his Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of Wisconsin, is a professor of communication, a former Senior Fulbright Award winner, and the author of over sixty journal articles and book chapters.
