Can a photograph capture the sensation of a warm spring breeze or the smell of freshly fallen snow? Weather, Weather, the third volume in a series of creative collaborations between renowned artist and bestselling author Maira Kalman, New York Times bestselling author Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, is an evocative exploration of the physical environments captured in photographs from around the world. From the rainy streets of Paris to a sun-dappled pool in Beverly Hills, from steamy summer sidewalks in Brooklyn to snow-covered fields in Japan, the photographs depict much more than what first meets the eye. Featuring vibrant new paintings by Kalman inspired by these photographs and poetic prose by Handler that bring the images to life, Weather, Weather is a tender reflection on the passing of seasons, perspective, and memory.

Maira Kalman is a bestselling and award-winning artist, illustrator, and writer whose books include 13 Words (with Daniel Handler), My Favorite Things, Beloved Dog, and The Elements of Style. Her artwork has been the subject of 14 solo exhibitions and has also been featured in group exhibitions in major museums.
Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, is the internationally renowned author of the A Series of Unfortunate Events series, whose books have sold more than 60 million copies in 44 languages.
Gr 4–7—This volume is a collection of mostly black-and-white weather-related photographs from the Museum of Modern Art, interspersed with Kalman's colorful paintings based on famous photographs. Handler's prose springs off the central question, "What is the weather like where you are?," with a grouping of images for each weather condition. The use of white space and the placement of photographs on the page focus the eye, while Handler's minimalist musings offer a playful guide through a broad topic. The simplicity of the text will lend itself to lively cross-curricular classroom discussion. The end pages provide a complete index to the photographs for further study. Although this small, cloth-bound volume would easily fit in small hands, older students are likely to get more out of this work. VERDICT A niche selection, but overall a thoughtfully executed introduction to weather in art. Consider wherever this duo are popular.—Jane Miller, Nashville Public Library
