Synopsis

Faced with the dichotomy of his moral opposition to war and an innate sense of duty to his fellow soldiers little did F. Scott Service realize when he was called for deployment in Iraq that his tour of duty was destined to change him forever.

Witnessing the violence of a country ravaged by chaos and facing the disintegration of his life back home, his sojourn in Iraq forced him to fight a new battle within himself and to question everything he had come to believe. What had once been a noble intention became a struggle to salvage what was left of his humanity, an excursion into the darkest recesses of the human mind. Pushed to the edge, only then would he discover what lay within.

Author F. Scott Service recounts his wartime experience within an artfully lyrical epistolary composition transcribed from the handwritten journals he kept in Iraq. Lines in the Sand: An American Soldier's Personal Journey in Iraq is a powerful exercise in self-exploration amid heartwrenching loss and anguish.

From the Author

Why would a Conscientious Objector make the choice to go war?

In this unique book marking the 10-year anniversary of my return home from Iraq while being deployed with the U.S. Army, I answer that and much more through a transcription of the personal, handwritten journals I kept while stationed at Camp Anaconda.

I take you on a roller coaster ride through the realities of my Iraq War experience. From the boredom to the bombs, from losing my marriage to finding my inner spirituality, and with on the spot journaling, you're in the front seat.

Mine is a story of love, betrayal, fear, courage, despair, and hope.

Review

"Impeccably written, relentlessly engaging, so intimate it hurts, Service's extraordinary tale is where the reader wants and needs to be." - Joel R. Dennstedt, Readers' Favorite.com

"F. Scott Service is a gifted writer. His words are eloquent, with powerful expressions. In his chronicle he records daily events in a very intimate and honest manner. He taps into the sensory and explains in personal detail what he is observing, enduring and feeling. Whether you agree with his views on war and government or not, you cannot help but be captivated by this narrative. It is truly a remarkable story of tragedy to triumph." - Cheryl E. Rodriguez, Readers' Favorite.com

"I loved Lines in the Sand: An American Soldier's Personal Journey in Iraq. Loved. It. This book is one that is incredibly hard to put down, and readers may, in fact, find themselves obsessively reading the story from the start through to the finish, all in one sitting. I highly recommend this book and this author... " - Chris Fischer, Readers' Favorite.com

"F. Scott Service takes his readers into the ugly realities of the Iraqi War, his personal relationships, and his intense struggle with himself. Highly recommended!" - Maria Beltran, Readers' Favorite.com
