In this internationally published business strategy book, global marketing and sales leader John Wessinger highlights risk-taking and innovation as essential skills for success in business—whether you’re updating your business plan or catching the next big market wave.
“Companies that rely blindly on old patterns rather than continuously shifting their approaches to fit new situations are just asking to be swamped by the next big wave. This rare and engaging business manual should appeal equally to the manager’s inner surfer and the surfer’s inner manager.”
—Kirkus Reviews
Business is a lot like surfing. There are ups and downs. Conditions are always changing. It takes years of practice and, if you are not prepared, you could get wiped out by the next big wave of change.
In Ride the Wave, John Wessinger combines his sales and marketing expertise with his love of surfing. Through his business and surf experiences, he’s learned that playing it safe and avoiding personal and professional risk will get you nowhere. Instead, he shares a process for making risk a strategic and tactical part of your business.
Surfing big waves can be risky, but they can also bring momentum and opportunity. Ride the Wave illustrates how successful organizations can use surfing principles to overcome disruptive market challenges, build new skills, increase sales, and find success in the face of risk.
In this business success book, readers and surfers can learn how to:

THE NEW CHALLENGES
We are in an era in which technology and information-sharing platforms have given buyers and consumers more information about products and services than ever before. There is a new power dynamic between companies and customers in which buyers no longer need organizations to help them make a purchase decision. As the competitive landscape continues to change, business leaders will need a new process for overcoming challenges and a new mindset to find success.
BE MORE LIKE THE SURFER
Author John Wessinger believes that organizations must learn to embrace the conditions (quickly evaluate changing markets), adopt a progression-based mindset (continually build new skills) and use risk as a compass (willingly explore risk-driven strategies) to thrive in these new conditions. Business leaders must be more like surfers and approach marketing and selling the same way surfers approach riding waves: by using a set of principles to overcome new challenges and leveraging the natural momentum within changing markets to break through the status quo.
RIDE THE WAVE
This book is for business leaders, organizational teams and anyone looking for a process to overcome a new personal or professional challenge. Ride the Wave provides the reader with a tactical roadmap of how successful organizations have used the principles to overcome disruptive market challenges, build new skills and find success in the face of extreme professional risk. This book will help you embrace the changes we are all experiencing and create a powerful new relationship with risk by exploring it head-on instead of avoiding it
On July 1, 2014, I began a new journey. Much like an odyssey, I answered a call to an adventure that would change how I approached business and my life. My journey was tough. The toughest thing I have ever done. I experienced two epic failures that would serve as the genesis for this book, and the challenges I write about here are ones that I had to overcome personally. I have firsthand experience with everything written in this book and have the mental and physical scars to prove it. In writing this book, I kept specific people in mind and wanted those closest to me to serve as the inspiration and audience for this book. My goal was to entertain, motivate, and forever change the people who would read my story. Even though this is my journey, there's a universal lesson within the pages and chapters of this book and a unique message that will help anyone overcome a new business or personal challenge that is bigger than themselves.
The reason you need to read this book is because of change. Change is happening in business, and it's impacting our personal lives faster than anyone could have predicted or anticipated. We're starting to see the power of technology and information when it's available to anyone with an Internet connection. We've seen how small companies, large organizations, and even individuals are leveraging that power to do amazing things on an unprecedented scale. In order to adapt to this change and stay relevant, you will need the ability to understand, manage, and explore the changing business situations around you quickly and effectively. You will need to ask, "What are the challenges of the new market conditions? What skills or knowledge is needed? What personal and professional risk am I willing to take on to find success?"
During my journey, I answered these questions through a set of personal and professional experiences. These experiences led me to write this book and to create a process to overcome these new challenges for myself, but also for others. I developed this process for anyone to understand and overcome the new challenges happening around them. In this book, I want to share what I learned and help you overcome the same challenges I experienced. This is your playbook for the new way to succeed in business and life.
This book will walk you through a new process for overcoming challenges and give you the confidence to make tough decisions and find success. What makes this book different is the use of the surfer as a model for you to follow and a new set of principles to apply to the business world. These principles create a repeatable process that's simple and easy to use, but that also achieves results. Most books use the past to try to explain the future. This book looks forward, however, instead of looking back, and uses the lens of the surfer to encourage action in a new direction. Riding the wave is about using the natural momentum of the change that we're experiencing to overcome challenges instead of being crushed or wiped out by them. The goal is to be more like the surfer and to ride the wave.
