Reviews

Gr 4–6-Freshened by reorganization and new illustrations, this latest edition begins with easy methods for producing music. The sections move to experimentation with rings and pings using household items, generating beats and rhythms with percussion materials, forming sounds with vibrating air, and plucking and strumming stringed things. More complex projects follow, such as building wooden instruments, recording sounds, orchestrating, songwriting, and more. New coauthor Haynes strengthens the already wide scope of topics with intriguing information on how diverse communities incorporate music into their lives. Basic music principles and terminology are smoothly explained within the text. While the main text flows well, directions for constructing some of the more complex musical instruments can be difficult to follow. Since supply lists of needed materials do not preface the step-by-step directions, readers must pre-determine what items are needed. Prior knowledge in the use of hand tools would also be helpful when constructing some projects. Sometimes the text urges to seek adult help, but adult supervision is not always issued. Close-up photos enhance the understanding of the written directions. Colorful borders, headings, and fonts embellish page layouts. The book conveys the joys of exploring sounds and offers children and caregivers a mixed, interactive collection of fun ways to experiment with music. VERDICT This edition would be an attractive additional purchase for libraries without the previous volume, or for libraries needing a replacement copy. -Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron
